Woche 24: Schnee Ueberall
It snoweddddddddd so bloody much. And its the coldest I've ever experienced. It was -18 on Tuesday. Yeah try walking in that at 7am.
Words this week (I am reading Murder on the Orient Express) ((wuschig came from my fave German show)):
Montag
I went to work (to the class I did the cover for, but this time only as assistant), we did some sheets about clothing. Then I came home, had some soup for lunch, and prepared to go back out. I had to go to a Wohngruppe on the other side of town (a Wohngruppe is like a foster home, a home for where kids whose parents can't look after them) because a mentor there had asked for Nachhilfe (afterschool tutoring) for one of the kids there. I went there, tried to suss out his level, did some simple past activities, then I went home. Its two buses, the first was absolutely rammed and freezing, the second got 5 metres up the road and had to stop for 20 minutes for some reason. It took me double the time it should've to get home (2 hours!). I was so grateful for slippers when I got in.
Dienstag
I was in super early. I also fell over in the shower (NEVER USING COCONUT OIL IN THE BATH EVER AGAIN). Barely any students were in because of how bad the snow and ice was. The students had to answer a text about the Celtic Tiger (Ireland's economic boom) then make timelines about the history of Ireland. After work, I came back and went to the shop to do the very British thing and buy soup, bread and milk. I had soup for my tea and did yoga and reading for the rest of the day.
Mittwoch
I had an early morning again. The class are having a test tomorrow and I was supposed to help them with their arguments (they have to write a short comment about why we eat bad foods/why we don't like eating good foods), which they had to do for homework. However, like last week, many students didn't do the homework, so I had to sit with a small group again to give them any help they needed. Then I had a free period because the teacher I was supposed to be working with was off sick, so I prepared my Nachhilfe lesson for the next day. For the next two lessons I had to give an activity with two students at a time, where they had to roll one die (dice?) and that number told them which poster to choose (the posters were to do with anti-masss shootings and pro gun control), the second die (dice??) showed how long they spoke for (i.e. 1= 30 secs, 2 = 1 min etc...). This helped with spontaneous talking and opinion forming. When I got home I was shattered.
Donnerstag
I went to work, where the students discussed their favourite quotes from Chris Gardener (the motivational speaker) and then we watched the Pursuit of Happyness. After work I walked into town to the library to give my Nachhilfe lesson, where I gave activities on simple past tense and I gave him a homework of learning the past tense form of verbs and a sheet with 8 questions of present, past, future, modals, questions, just so I can get a better idea of what areas I need to focus on with him.
Freitag
I just cleaned the flat and did yoga. I also watched my fave German programme Vier Hochzeiten und eine Traumreise. I also found out that our mortgage application had been accepted! Then I had a bath and was in there for like an hour and a half just reading my book.
Samstag
I had to go to the big supermarket up the road (difficult walking in the snow now its been pushed down a lot, its very slippy), because the one closer to me is closed due to technical difficulties (not sure what that means- the entire shop is gated off now). The shopping cost a lot more than it usually does. The food is better quality, but when you're an ok cook, live alone and are trying to save money, you don't mind a few wonky peppers, you know?
Sonntag
Today I worked on a lesson for Tuesday, which I will give alongside the other teacher. I made a powerpoint of different sites (pixelated pictures) in London and New York, each with a task or video with them, and the students have to first guess if its in London or New York, then say what the site is, then have to do the activity or watch the clip. I hope they like it. I also made a nice dinner of salmon, spaghetti, spring onions and carrots. Now I have nothing but onions, water and apples in the fridge.
Have a good week y'all. :) A video of the snow.
